Though I imagine Hikki, Utada Hikaru, would
post an English version of her comment on her mother’s suicide later, being strongly
moved by her words today, I thought maybe, it would be a good a thing to let
her fans overseas be able to read a translation, quickly, on the day the original
Japanese post came out. So, here it is. I can only hope the best for her.

In the morning on August 22nd, my
mother committed suicide. There seems to be much guesswork going on, and I
would like to explain a little.
She had been suffering from mental illness
for a very long time.
Because of the nature of the illness, for
her to take medical treatment of her own will was very difficult. As a family,
I always wondered what would be the best for her. Since very little, I have
watched her illness grow. As the symptoms got worse, her distrust toward
people, including her family never stopped getting deeper. The boundary between
reality and delusion grew vague and she gradually lost control over her feelings
and behavior. I was constantly tossed around, and I could not do anything to
help her.
While I hope she was finally released from
the years of suffering, what she did in the end was, just too sad, which I can
only regret. She was often misunderstood… She was very timid but assertive, had
strong morals, loved to laugh, was quick witted, impulsive and fragile as a child, careless
and the cutest person in the world. Among many sad memories, when I think of my
mother, in my mind, I see her smiling. I am proud to be her daughter. I
am so thankful that we were together. Receiving many warm words, I realize the
support by so many people.
Thank you.
