彼が地獄での重労働に疲れ果て、ペンペン草のカッペ専用の長屋で眠っていると、外で犬の鳴き声がしました。
Tired from hard work in hell, Cappe the sheperd’s purse was sleeping inside his very own row house when he heard dogs barking outside.
「ワン！ワン！」
“Bark! Bark!”
目を覚まして外に飛び出すと数匹の犬が走り去っていきました。
He woke up to jump outside. Several dogs ran away.
彼は下を見て、ギョッとしました。人間の子供の首なし死体が転がっていたからです。
Looking down, he was surprised to see a corpse of a human child with no head.
なぜ犬がこんなものを持ってきたんだろうと、彼はふと考えましたが、
He wondered why the dogs had brought him such a thing.
疲れていたので、すぐにペンペン草の部屋のベッドにもぐりこんで眠りこけました。
However, as he was tired, soon he went back to his bed in the row house.
翌日、彼は鬼に海辺に連れて行かれました。
The next day, the devil took him to the beach.
「お前も毎日、働かされて疲れているだろう。スイカ割りをさせてやろう。うまく割ったら食べさせてやるからな」
“You must be tired, being forced to work every day. I’ll let you split a watermelon. If you do well, I’ll let you have some”
鬼はトカイ人の一人に命じて、彼に目隠しをさせ、斧を手に持たせました。
The devil ordered a Tokai-jin to cover his eyes and hand him an axe.
「これで見事にスイカを真っ二つにしたら、少しは仕事を楽にしてやってもいいぞ」
“If you split the watermelon right down the middle, I shall reduce your work a little”
鬼が珍しく親切なことを言ったので、彼は嫌な予感がしました。
The devil seldom says such kind things. He had a bad feeling.
「右、右」「もうちょっと左」
“To the right, right.” “A little more to the left.”
周りからトカイ人たちの声が聞こえました。
He heard the voices of the Tokai-jins around him.
普通、トカイ人でも、こういうときは本当のことは言いません。それは彼も知っていました。
Normally, Tokai-jins also don’t tell the truth. And he knew it.
まして根っからの嘘つきの彼は、人を信用しないので、
Moreover, being born a liar himself, he never trusted anybody.
トカイ人たちが嘘をついていると思い込み、右と言われたら左、左と言われたら右に行きました。
He believed the Tokai-jins were lying, and went right when they said left, and left when they said right.
「そこじゃない！」
“It’s not there!”
トカイ人が大声で叫びました。
The Toka-jins screamed.
彼はここだと思って、思い切り斧を振り下ろしましたが、全然手ごたえがしません。
そんなことが何回も続きました。
He thought it must be there and swung down the axe with all his might.
Nothing was there. This kept going on many times.
彼は次第にトカイ人が自分を馬鹿にして本当のことを言っているのではないかと思い始めました。
Gradually, he started thinking that the Tokai-jins could be making fun of him, telling him the truth.
そこで右と言われたら右、左と言われたら左に行くことにしました。
So he decided to go right when they said right, and left when they said left.
「よし、そこだ！」
“Yes, right there!”
トカイ人たちが一斉に叫びました。
The Tokai-jins screamed in unison.
彼は思い切り、斧を振り下ろしました。
He swung down the axe with all his might.
ザックリとスイカの割れる手ごたえがしました。
He felt the watermelon split in half.
彼は、スイカが食べられると思って大喜びしました。
He was in great joy, thinking he could have some watermelon now.
鬼の声がしました。
He heard the devil’s voice.
「よくやった。目隠しを外していいぞ」
“Well done. You can take off your blinder now”
彼は喜んで目隠しを外しました。
He removed it with joy.
そして目の前を見て仰天しました。
And he could not believe what he saw in front of him.
彼が割ったのは自分の息子のクビ（頭？）だったのです。
What he had just cracked was his son’s head.
「どうした？早く食え。美味そうな脳みそじゃないか。カッペの脳みそは美味いぞ」
“What are you waiting for? Eat it. Doesn’t it look delicious? Cappe brains are delicious.”
鬼が彼に命じましたが、彼は黙っていました。
The devil ordered him, but he remained silent.
「生じゃ食えないのか？じゃあ、味噌汁(→脳みそのスープ)にしてやろう」
“You can’t eat it raw? We’ll make you a brain soup instead, then.”
鬼はトカイ人に命じて、鍋に彼の息子の割れた頭を入れて煮させ、味噌汁を作らせました。
The devil made a Tokai-jin put his son’s cracked head in the pot to cook soup.
彼は呆然としながら、息子の脳みそで作った味噌汁を飲みました。
Feeling numb, he drank the soup, made from the brain of his son.
